SERIES | THE BED 2001-2002
The bed is an object that is loaded with implications. It is more than a place to sleep. It is a place of comfort, of rest, of relaxation. It is host to intimate relations. It also has to be serviced by its owner or occupier, or by hired help. It is a place to die. Not many objects in life are so much a part of it. The color image of the small girl in pajamas going to bed was based on an illustration from a child’s picture dictionary of the 1950s and was the catalyst for my thinking about all the roles a bed plays in one’s life, both simple and complex.
