SERIES | TWO HANDS ARE BETTER THAN ONE  2000

When I started investigating visual materials from the mid-twentieth century to incorporate into my work, I was initially responding to the pictures.  It soon became obvious to me that I was responding to the text as well as the image, and in some cases, the words were not only equal, but sometimes became more important than the illustration.  The text was the trigger to my contemporary artistic response.  When I read the caption “Two hands are better than one” under some illustrated examples, I burst out laughing, literally.  While some women might enjoy cleaning, it is a recurring chore to me.  I immediately thought of several alternative ways a woman could use her hands, for more enjoyable and satisfying practices.  The book this source comes from is a textbook for home economics education in secondary schools and was published in 1953.
